About the Coastal Barbarians

Coastal Barbarians is a mixed ability rowing club and their aim is simple: to increase grassroots participation in coastal rowing by making it more accessible and inclusive.

Why?  Because they love coastal rowing and want others to enjoy the health benefits and community spirit it provides.

The home of the Coastal Barbarians is the Coastal Rowing Centre, Studland in Dorset.

The Coastal Barbarians community is made up of free-spirited coastal rowers from around the UK and further afield – rowing members are “Tourists”. They also have “Supporters”, members who volunteer or sponsor mixed ability activities, rather than being active rowers.

Many “Tourists” are also members of other rowing clubs. Some have their own coastal rowing boats and manage their own training at times and places that are convenient; others go to the Coastal Rowing Centre to train and hire boats. They have regular training days at Studland, all members are welcome.

As well as enjoying a recreational row and going off on tour, many Coastal Barbarians train for and compete in the Coastal Rowing League and enter national and international coastal rowing championships. They aim is to have Coastal Barbarians entered in all the open, women and mixed races; across all different age groups (under 50, 50+, 60+); in singles, doubles and quads. Some competitions now welcome mixed-ability crews in doubles and quads, which is great.

They put composite crews together for training and events and help other clubs fill seats when they are short of an athlete or two; they want as many people on the water as possible.

As a Coastal Barbarian you will receive discounts and quickly recover the membership fee – see all the Coastal Rowing Centre activities.

Annual membership to the Coastal Barbarian Rowing Club is just £48 per person.

You are very welcome to join the Coastal Barbarians as a “Tourist” or “Supporter”.
